Supporting students to and through college since 2012

Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School (WHEELS) is a public school (pre-K to 12) in Washington Heights. Our students are low-income, have mostly entered WHEELS below grade level, and 90 percent will be the first in their families to attend college. Still, we have a 100 percent college application rate and, last year, 91 percent of our graduates enrolled in college.

Through Friends of WHEELS, our goal is to make sure that every student in our school has the information, counseling, and extracurricular experiences they need to get into and succeed in college and beyond.

  • Nationally, only 8% of students from low-income communities graduate from college. We're determined to change the outcome for our students.

While the rigorous academics at WHEELS prepare students for college coursework, the services they receive through Friends of WHEELS help them cultivate a college-going identity, navigate the application and financial aid processes, cope with college transition, and master the life skills that success in college and a career will require.
