“The Covid-19 racial disparity in infections and deaths is viewed as the latest chapter of historical injustices, generational poverty and a flawed health care system. The epidemic has hit African-Americans and Hispanics especially hard, including in New York, where the virus is twice as deadly for those populations.” —NYT, 4/19/20
Washington Heights and our community have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. Unfortunately, several students and families have lost family members and more have experienced hospitalization. Many students, families and alumni are also managing food insecurity, and a range of other challenges due to lost income and lost jobs.
We are more committed than ever to supporting WHEELS students to work towards reaching their college dreams and ambitions. We are more committed than ever to providing our college access and success programs, and fostering stability and individualized support. We also continue to support critical youth leadership, such as the work of the Clean Air Green Corridor.
Your support of Friends of WHEELS at this critical moment enables us to support our students and alumni. Please join our Forward Together campaign to help us deliver and sustain our work today and into tomorrow.
